I hold a PhD and MA in English from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a BA in English from Williams College. I am a specialist in Medieval Studies, the history and development of English language and literature, and Writing Studies. I have taught at the university undergraduate and graduate levels. I am certified in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) by the University of Toronto, Canada. I also design and teach international summer intensive English language and American cultural immersion programs. I have published books, articles, and poems. I founded the Bioedumimicry Association for Biologically Inspired Educational Systems and Practices in 2017. My teaching philosophy centers on education as a mutual teaching-learning experience based upon collaboration rather than competition, and integration of academic, personal, and community life. In support of a collaborative approach, I employ my training in Marshall Rosenberg’s Non-Violent Communication (NVC) method. I believe in equal and open access to education, and in empowering people over and through technology.

Inspired by the theories and observations of biomimicry, I formulated bioedumimicry and began applying it to my teaching and course designs in 2016. In 2017 I founded the Bioedumimicry Association for Biologically Inspired Educational Systems and Practices. Bioedumimicry applies organic systems thinking to the complex of context, design, infrastructure, organization, administration, and delivery-response of education, from the perspective of the discipline of biomimicry.
